The Mining Informatics and Machine Learning Applications Lab of the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering, University of Western Macedonia, is the department’s central research and training hub for applied digital technologies in mining, geotechnical engineering, and the environment. It is fully equipped with modern high-performance workstations, large-format plotting and scanning capabilities, high-resolution projection systems, and a comprehensive suite of state-of-the-art commercial and open-source software. This includes advanced packages for geological modelling, spatial data analysis, geostatistics, resource/reserve estimation, mine design and scheduling, as well as GIS, remote sensing, and Python-based machine learning frameworks.
The Lab supports intensive data- and computation-driven projects across the mining value chain, from exploration and digital geological modelling to production optimisation, mine planning, and decision support. Its personnel have extensive industrial experience and have provided specialised mining informatics and AI services, training, and customised software solutions to companies in more than 20 countries, ensuring strong connectivity with real operational needs and datasets.
